The Grand Duchy of Lithuania: the French Connection
December 9, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm CET
It is a somewhat common belief – even among some map dealers – that depictions of the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania, which existed for over 500 years, were always within maps titled ‘Poland,’ and that Lithuania was always shown as a province within the Kingdom of Poland. This presentation hopes to correct that belief, with numerous examples of maps by famous mapmakers depicting Lithuania separate from Poland.
This lecture will be presented by Andrew Kapochunas, Secretary and Webmaster of the New York Map Society. Mr. Kapochunas also created www.lithuanianmaps.com in 2008. A website dedicated to Lituanian cartography that is updated weekly with new maps. The website currently hos over 4,000 images of antique maps of the historic Lithuanian area. Mr. Kapochunas is also a member of the Lithuanian Cartographic Society.
This Lecture Will Take Place Wednesday, December 9th at 6:00 pm (CET – Paris) or 12:00 pm (EST – New York).
