Large French Version of D. Arrowsmith’s United States. P.F. Tardieu 1812 Paris
Engraved by Dezauche, undated but published in 1812. Four sheet wall map dissected and laid down on canvas. Although the title is in French, all the map designations are in English. Original hand color. Extends from the Atlantic to the Mississippi and its feeders to the west, with some of Lower Canada but with only the Gulf Coast portion of Florida. Inset plan of Washington, D.C. and a title vignette of Niagara Falls. Napoleon had recently sold Louisiana Territory to the United States prompting interest in France for a recent U.S. map. The paper is slightly blue tinged often found in French papers from this period. Bright, dramatic early U.S. wall map.
