Dwight Clark Shepler (1905 – 1975) was an American painter and illustrator whose output included many striking posters of U.S. ski areas prior to World War II. During the War he served as an artist with the US Navy, documenting events in both the European and Pacific theatres. This uncommon 1934 map documents hunting opportunities (the variety indicated by the fox in the title cartouche at lower left along with the different birds and squirrel at lower right) in this area of Massachusetts, illustrated with vignettes of trees and landmarks. Trails, roads, hunt meets, and wooded and open areas are noted. Text below title reads: “Delineated by Dwight Shepler 1934. Survey by E. Worthington. Lithographed by Court Sq. Press.” A scarce item, held by the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center Collection, but not listed in any library on OCLC. #56470
