A rare map of the English settlements in the Mid-Atlantic region, loosely based on John Smith’s map.  The map extends from Long Island in the north to the Chesapeake Bay, showing the coastline and inland rivers.  Many Indian place names are given, along with some European names (though not always accurately) on Long Island, the Delaware Bay and the Chesapeake.  These include “Jacobs Stadt” (Jamestown), Forts Christian and Kasimier, N. Uytrecth and Breukelen and Nieuw Jork, the latter indicated with a small grid on Manhattan Island.  A delightful cartouche with Indians and European traders (and an odd palm tree) graces the lower right corner.  A charming map.
